What is chargeable weight?
Chargeable weight is the weight airlines use to calculate freight costs. It is the higher of the gross weight (actual weight) or the volumetric weight (dimensional weight).
How do you calculate chargeable weight for airfreight?
First, calculate the volumetric weight:
Volumetric weight (kg)=
Length (cm)×Width (cm)×Height (cm)
6000
Volumetric weight (kg)=Length (cm)×Width (cm)×Height (cm)6000
(Some airlines use 5000 instead of 6000.)
Then compare:
If the volumetric weight is higher → use the volumetric weight
If the gross weight is higher → use the gross weight
The higher value is the chargeable weight.
What is the maximum height for an airfreight shipment?
It depends on the aircraft type:
Passenger aircraft (wide-body): approx. 160 cm
Passenger aircraft (narrow-body): approx. 80–100 cm
Cargo aircraft (main deck): up to 300 cm or more
Always confirm with the airline.
What is a consolidation?
A consolidation is when multiple small shipments from different customers are combined into one larger shipment to reduce transportation costs.
What is the limitation for airline liability in case of damage to an airfreight shipment?
Airlines operate under the Montreal Convention, which limits liability to approximately 22 SDR per kg (Special Drawing Rights) of gross weight.
This amount is converted into local currency (USD/EUR) based on the exchange rate at the time of settlement.
Important:
Airlines only compensate for the damaged pieces (packages).
If only 1 package is damaged in a multi-piece shipment, compensation applies only to that package — not the entire shipment.
Is Bendix Transport an IATA-licensed airfreight forwarder?
Yes, Bendix Transport is an IATA-licensed airfreight forwarder and is authorized to issue Air Waybills (AWB).
